Food, War and Politics

When I started this blog, only a week and a half ago, I had no intentions of discussing politics here…

Obviously, the events of the last few days in Israel and Lebanon are hard to ignore.  I have many friends in that region – and my thoughts and prayers are with them all.  Whatever you may believe, whatever side you take, there is no doubt that innocent civilians on both sides of the border will be hurt.

In related news, (and the food part)  Anthony Bourdain has posted both on eGullet and the Travel Channel forums.  He’s in Lebanon right now – there to film an episode of No Reservations.  He says that he and the crew are all doing well – working on their tans.   Get out safely.

Take care everybody.  It’s a nasty situation, with no solution in sight.  Be safe.

Culinary Wasteland

I’m sure that there is good food to be had in North Dakota and North-Western Minnesota.  I just can’t seem to find it.

I just got back from a weekend in the area. After a really long Friday at work, I headed south for some relaxation and to do some shopping.  First of all, it was damn hot.  About 100 F where I was yesterday.  Too hot to really do anything, so I went back to the hotel, watched the Middle East news on CNN, and took a nap.

But I’m not joking when I say that it’s hard to find anything good to eat.  I hope the locals have cleverly hidden jewels of restaurants.  I hope they’re laughing at the silly tourists who don’t know where to go.  But if I see another deep-fried … well, anything in the next week, I’ll scream.
